Best Recovery Spas in Sydney

Imagine being in the snow without gear for over two minutes, then jumping into a hot tub, before relaxing in a salt heaven. The experiences at Cryospa in Crows Nest are one helluva way to relax, but what is it really like? We sent URBANSWEAT writers Kate and Laura along to try this totally different kind of ‘workout’.

Step 1: Cryotherapy

To begin with, we were thrown into ice-cold winter, the CRYO SAUNA, just like in Game of Thrones… sort of. Cryotherapy is a hyper-cooling treatment, suitable for anyone who is looking for muscle recovery and repair, injury treatment, weight loss or skin rejuvenation. It is fast and effective and apparently you will burn up to 800 calories during one session. But don’t worry, one session only goes for up to three minutes. You are ‘wrapped’ in fine (nitrogen) mist, where temperatures drop to up to -140 degrees Celsius. (Yes, we’re not kidding). It is freeeezing, but as soon as you step out you will feel energised and motivated.

Step 2: Infrared Sauna

Straight after Cryo, we went spent 30 minutes in the infrared sauna. A lot of people do both because CryoSpa says that will increase the calories you burn and therefore help in weight loss, having like a ‘double effect’. What is an infrared sauna? Well, heat and light are used to help relax and detoxify your body, and they say you can burn up to 600 calories! The infrared waves activate our sweat glands, which is a mechanism in our body used to eliminate toxins. There has been some research that suggests infrared saunas have a lot of health benefits including promoting weight loss, detoxification, aiding poor digestion, and they may even improve the look of cellulite.  We were sweating buckets but it definitely made us feel renewed. It’s like during a workout, you sweat, want to give up (we wanted to get out), but you push your way through to the end, and it is amazing.

Step 3: The Salt Room

Finally, we had a little nap in the Himalayan Salt Room, which is used for halotherapy treatments. This treatment is thought to be beneficial against nervous tension, insomnia, and difficulties in concentration. The unprocessed Himalayan Crystal Salt is rich in magnesium, copper, calcium, and bromine, which may give your body a super powerful nutrient boost. We could definitely feel it, and stepping out of there we were relaxed and felt ‘Zen-ed’. Expect to fall asleep in the Himalayan Salt Room, or just zone out.

Our verdict?

Crysospa is a special kind of spa that is perfect for those who need a little down time or some recovery sessions. We left feeling calm, relaxed and happy, and can’t help thinking that our bodies thanked us for treating them to this! Even if you are not the type of person who goes to a traditional sauna, these treatments could be just what you are looking for!
