REVIEW: BIKRAM YOGA, SUTHERLAND SHIRE
Who: Bikram Yoga Sutherland Shire Where: Top Floor, 20-26 President Avenue Caringbah, NSW, 2229 What is it: A bikram yoga studio What they say: “Grab your mat and get ready to change your life. Bikram Yoga will make you sweat, laugh and do more for your health, body and overall well-being than you ever imagined possible!” What Urbansweat says: This Bikram yoga class is run in a large, empty room which is heated to body temperature (around 38C). Throughout the 90 minutes, a teacher will guide you through a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises which you’ll repeat twice. As our teacher Nathan explained, the first set is to warm you up and the second enables you to ‘work deeper’. The classes are for all levels but if it’s your first time, make sure you let your teacher know. You’ll probably find your first session to be quite difficult because the heat can be quite a shock to the system. However, you’re regularly encouraged to sit down and recover whenever you need to. Make sure you wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that you’re happy to sweat in because there will be a lot of sweat! Bring a big bottle of water as well as your own yoga mat and a large towel. However, if you happen to forget, you can hire them there for $2 each. There is also a large change room where you can leave your belongings (free if you bring your own lock or $2 to hire a padlock) and showers are also available. Before going along, it’s advised that you have a small meal (like a banana) two hours before the class. It’s quite an intense workout so you’ll need all the fuel you can get. Drop in or membership: $39 introductory pass for 31 days or $20 for a single pass visit. Want to read our other reviews? Check out our FITNESS REVIEW section.
