Where to workout in Bondi

With the ocean on your doorstep and mile upon mile of beautiful golden sand, it’s easy to assume you never need to step foot in a gym once you’re in Bondi Beach. But don’t be fooled, because the iconic beach is filled with some of Sydney’s best workouts — both indoors and out. Here’s URBANSWEAT’s pick of the crop.

BEST FOR: Getting a body like an athlete

If you’re after results, Agoga is the place for you. The self-described ‘athlete’s gym’ sees its clients train like athletes in small classes with 5-16 members, so there’s nowhere to hide if you’re (quite literally) not pulling your weight. The studio offers all sorts of different classes, named things like Leaner, Faster and Stronger. We recommend Leaner. Combining high repetition, lightweight resistance work with aerobic intervals and active recovery, you will move through a sequence of sports-inspired stations and can find yourself doing anything from treadmill sprints to strength work in a 50-minute session. At $35 per class, this boutique gym run by Libby Babet is definitely an investment. As are those famous Bondi PT’s abs.

BEST FOR: The Instagram addict

If you like your Downward Dog with a side of scenery and ocean views, Yoga By The Sea is for you. Enjoy waterfront classes at Bondi’s Icebergs and allow your body, mind and soul a moment of calm before a busy day. The classes, which encompass flexibility and strength, also have the benefit of being outside in the fresh air. With an oceanic soundscape, you really will find yourself leaving far more relaxed than you came in. At $20 for a casual drop-in rate, the classes are reasonably-priced, friendly and relaxed. It’s worth remembering, however, that on top of your $20 fee, you will have to pay $7 to get into Icebergs itself. From $20.

BEST FOR: The Bondi Bikini Body

bondi vixen

Bondi Vixen is a long-established, renowned fitness classes in Bondi Beach promise to help to ‘create your dream bikini body’. By way of high-intensity cardio drills, plyometrics and sandbag training, in an Athletix Shred class you’ll torch fat and burn some serious kilojoules. Not for the faint-hearted, these workouts are tough. However, the trainers mix up the routines all the time – ensuring you’ll never get bored. From $20 for the introductory offer.

BEST FOR: Working out with your Girl Squad

BUF Bondi is Bondi’s most popular group training community. You’ll find yourself boxing, completing HIIT circuits and performing strength and toning workouts to a pulsating soundtrack. Everything is targeted and tailored towards shaping the female body, and the atmosphere is fun, bubbly and supportive as a result. Aim for one of the 5.45am weekday sessions on Bondi’s grassy edges, and watch the sun rise and the waves crash as you sculpt your beach physique. Quintessentially Sydney and one for any beach bum gal. From $30.

BEST FOR: Building core strength

If you prefer your training a little less high intensity than many of the options on this list, then Pilates at BodyMindLife is the class for you. Mere moments from Bondi Beach, the studio offers an oasis of calm, in which you can slowly build up your strength on a reformer machine – as well as lengthen and tone your muscles. Like many of the BodyMindLife studios, you can be assured that you’re getting the best and most experienced teachers here, as well as state-of-the-art machines and up-to-date practices. Purchase an intro pass for $88 and enjoy four weeks with unlimited classes to see if it’s for you. Then, pay $48 a week once you’re fully hooked.
